Connecting Classrooms Through Song: World Voice Seminar Cardiff

Connecting Classrooms Through Song

29th January 2014 - 10.30am to 4pm

The Welsh Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5AL

The World Voice programme aims to ensure that, through training, collaboration and resources, all young people have the opportunity to use singing to develop their musicality and support wider learning.

This UK event will provide an introduction to, and update on, the World Voice Programme.  An invited audience – including teachers from connecting classroom schools and other organisations involved in education and music education – will have the opportunity to look at the aims of the programme, its resources, the current and planned work overseas and contribute to discussion about the development of activity in the UK – including the setting up of a training programme to support teachers to make the most of the opportunities World Voice can provide to support the British Council's Connecting Classrooms and the International Schools Award programmes.

The day will include:

·        An update on the programmes work to date and plans for the future both overseas and in the UK.

·        Exploration of the repertoire collected in India, Senegal, Ethiopia, Sudan, Argentina, Jordan and across the UK, including a chance to learn songs collected in the countries we are working with our World Voice Champions and our Artistic Director Richard Frostick.

·        Discussion about how best to use the repertoire as a tool for learning about other cultures.

·        The opportunity to help develop a UK-wide training programme for teachers to maximise the value of the World Voice songs and other teaching resources in the context of the British Council's wider educational work.

Attendance at this event is free, although places are limited.  Tea and coffee will be served on arrival and in the afternoon and lunch will also be provided.

The 2014 program will be the exciting realization of previous
relationships and new areas of exploration in Cuban arts and
healthcare. We are adding a behind-the-scenes theater program and will
continue a number of our successful partnerships with other arts
organizations.

There will be new faces and different places in our schedule to keep
the week full of surprises and exciting activities. However, we will
look forward to seeing our old friends and professional leaders
including;

Nisia Aguero, Vice President Consejo Nacional de las Casas de Cultura
Drs. Luis Heredia, Marcelino Feal, and Carlos Llapur with the Buena
Vista Social Club
Alicia Alonzo, Prima Ballerina and Founder of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba
and the BNC medical team

Scheduled highlights include:

Ballet Nacional de Cuba
Contemporary Dance Company, "RETAZOS"
Theater in Havana
National Symphony Orchestra
Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club
Taller Experimental Grafica
Visual Artist and Ceramicist, José Fuster
History and Architecture introduction to Havana
Healthcare overview and clinic visit

The morning lecture/discussion programs are always a favorite. They
provide a background that makes our visits with artists more
meaningful and productive. Participant experts and Cuban colleagues
will present on health issues in a specific art in preparation for our
visit to that venue. Everyone has the opportunity to learn about the
unique challenges for artists and healthcare professionals.

In addition, we plan time for workshops/clinics with Cuban artists who
may be interested in learning more about prevention and therapy of
their art-related problems.

Of course, there will be time for meals, discussions and music that
lead to better cultural understanding. Individuals will also have time
to pursue special interests and research objectives.

For a window to this world, see PAMA website at www.artsmed.org
"Regional Meetings" and the UIC website at

Call for contributions to the Access to Culture Platform
Working Group on Education & learning publication

"Rethinking education: empowering individuals with the appropriate educational tools, skills and competencies, for their active cultural, political and economic participation in society in Europe and beyond" (Working title)

1. Submission

The Editorial Committee of this peer-reviewed publication invites contributions in the form of: a paper or a case study, a best practice, a conference speech/presentation, interviews or other relevant contribution also in video format that focalize on certain aspects of this wide topic. Perspectives and methodologies drawn from a variety of disciplines are welcome.

2. Timeline

[      Abstracts (not more than 500 words) to be submitted within the 15 December 2013.
[      Complete paper to be submitted by the 30 January 2014.

3. Guidelines

[     For those who will be submitting a research paper (as opposed to a speech, interview, etc.), please contact the secretariat for the style guidelines of the publication.

4. Background and context

The Education & Learning Working Group of the Access to Culture Platform has the aim to explore the benefits of a closer synergy between education and culture within the context of the developments initiated by the EU Communication "A European Agenda for Culture within a Globalised World". In this process, the Working Group, consisting of representatives of a range of cultural networks and organisations working at the European level, has explored the various dimensions of the l inks between education and culture.

With the aim to contribute to the debate on the future of the Cultural and Education programmes, on December 2011, the Education & Learning Working Group of the Access to Culture Platform has organized a seminar in Brussels aimed to discuss about the so called "mismatch" between the cultural market and education. This event resulted in a list of 8th recommendations and on the recognition that the reform of study programmes in higher arts and culture education institutions should be based on a different philosophy of training: from teacher-led approaches with a narrow understanding of the profession to student based approaches taking into account the actual reality of the profession, in which professionals are increasingly asked to engage in different professional tasks ("portfolio career"), often in a self-employed context.

In 2013, the members of the Education & Learning Working Group of the Access to Culture Cultural Sector Platform expressed the wish to actively contribute to the debate on the communication from the Commission "Rethinking the education: investing in skills for better socio-economic outcomes" published in November 2012 calling for creating new capabilities:

In this new European policy for the educational sector emphasis is being placed on delivering the right skills for employment, increasing the efficiency and inclusiveness of our education and training institutions, on working collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders and on putting all the efforts in developing transversal skills: "Modern, knowledge-based economies require people with higher and more relevant skills. CEDEFOP forecasts predict that the proportion of jobs in the EU requiring tertiary level qualifications will increase from 29% in 2010 to 34% in 2020, while the proportion of low- skilled jobs will fall in the same period from 23% to 18%. Transversal skills such as the ability to think critically, take initiative, problem solve and work collaboratively will prepare individuals for today's varied and unpredictable career paths".[1]

Moreover, in the European Commission Analysis of the Green paper [2] the civil society asks education to change and thus to "offer students time to learn and to experiment, to think out of the box and to develop their own identity as an artist and creator. European, national and regional policymakers should acknowledge the independent and different functions of (higher arts) education and the CCI sector is also stressed. Otherwise, Europe will lose out on innovative potential and critical thinking, which is essential for an innovative creative sector. Educators and the CCI sector should share responsibility, invest in joint cooperation and overcome mutual prejudices".

5. Scope of the Publication

The aim of this Publication is to foster critical debate, stimulate innovative thinking and publish contributions written by academics, research experts as well as a broader set of practitioners, organizations, artist and people working in the cultural and education policy field.

We will particularly welcome contributions who could advance the debate on how "delivering the right skills for employment, increasing the efficiency and inclusiveness of our education and training institutions, on working collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders and on putting all the efforts in developing transversal skills: "Modern, knowledge-based economies require people with higher and more relevant skills. CEDEFOP forecasts predict that the proportion of jobs in the EU requiring tertiary level qualifications will increase from 29% in 2010 to 34% in 2020, while the proportion of low- skilled jobs will fall in the same period from 23% to 18%. Transversal skills such as the ability to think critically, take initiative, problem solve and work collaboratively will prepare individuals for today's varied and unpredictable career paths".[3]

This publication will be widely disseminated in 2014 by means of activities and events in Europe and beyond, following up the work of the Commission on implementation and analysis of the Communication.
